Allan Andranikian

Allan Andranikian

General Manager

Training Adults

Allan is a New York City native, born and raised in Washington Heights. During a visit to the Armenian countryside back in 2008, Allan began climbing on his grandfather’s cobblestone farm house. He has been an avid rock climber ever since.

Allan continued his climbing journey while pursuing a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was the captain of the college Climbing Team, as well as the head route setter at his campus climbing facility. He then moved to Boston to work full time as an engineer and became a member of Central Rock Gym. After learning of an opportunity that he would be unable to refuse, Allan decided to leave the engineering field and join the CRG team. He is excited to help foster a community centered around his passion, and share climbing with the people of his home city.

When he isn’t climbing, Allan enjoys hiking, reading, working on his motorcycle, and spending time with his wife, son, and dog.

Isabel Saylor

Isabel Saylor

General Manager

Kids Fitness Adults

Isabel grew up in San Francisco and was first introduced to climbing on a trip to the High Sierras in 2016. She really became passionate about it in 2020 when she was looking for an outlet for her energy while still being able to socially distance. Since then, Isabel has been fully immersed in the climbing community, as passionate about her own journey as well as others.

In addition to coaching our youth teams, Isabel also manages CRG Chelsea and runs a weekly strength training class. She is passionate about getting climbers (and non-climbers) to incorporate strength training into their exercise routine. She believes it is a great way to become stronger in everyday life, in addition to climbing.

Ryan is the Head Routesetter for our Chelsea location and has been climbing since 2010. During this time he has climbed across the world from Squamish, Canada to Rocklands, South Africa. In addition to climbing he has set for various levels of athletes from brand new climbers to world class athletes.

As an instructor he will focus on a holistic approach from climbing skills, strength training and mindset. When Ryan isn’t climbing he can be found playing various other sports, or riding his bike.

Tetsu Zhao

Tetsu Zhao

Head Routesetter

Training Kids Adults

Tetsu understands that everybody has a different relationship to climbing – for fun, for fitness, or for the friends made along the way. Whatever the reason may be, Tetsu can help you feel more confident in the climbing gym, and improve your understanding of important concepts in climbing.

Growing up, Tetsu had a knack for worrying his parents by always climbing things he shouldn’t have been on. He first visited the climbing gym over 10 years ago, and immediately knew that climbing was something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Although he studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in college, he really feels as though he was putting more time into learning how to climb. One thing led to another, and today he is the Head Routesetter of the Riverside location.

Outside of the gym, Tetsu can be found throwing pots at the ceramics studio, frantically doing a million things in his home kitchen, or eagerly trying to say hello to every dog he sees.

Sage Cronen-Townsend

Sage Cronen-Townsend

Director of Youth Programming

Kids Adults

As long as they can remember, Sage has been drawn to anything which lets them fly. Over the course of their life this has included sports from hiking to snowboarding to flying trapeze, and they spent the last few years climbing on and off at CRG Hadley. After moving to New York City to study mechanical engineering at NYU, Sage checked out CRG Manhattan and instantly fell in love with climbing and the community here!

Sage has previous experience teaching skiing, snowboarding, aerial silks, and a bit of engineering, and their favorite thing is bringing the sports they love to other people, regardless of experience or ability. Sage’s main goal when teaching is encouraging body trust and problem solving, something they believe is important on and off the wall.

Aside from climbing, Sage’s hobbies include wandering around the city, eating $1 pizza, and hanging out in their school’s makerspace.

Ady Wright

Ady Wright

Routesetter

Training Fitness Adults

If you ask her, she’ll tell you she was an awful climber when she first started climbing in 2011. Taking up the sport of climbing as a way of working out, Adeline became more serious about the sport quickly and began instructing in 2015!

In coaching clients who range in age from 8-70, her main focus is to help clients build healthy climbing habits and celebrate any kind of progression! Climbing is her favorite sport because she is able to go out her own pace, see the results of her hard work, and help other climbers do the same!

Selena Spier

Selena Spier

Climbing Coach

Adaptive Kids Adults

Selena is a former long-distance runner who was introduced to climbing five years ago, back home in Rhode Island. Despite starting out with “zero coordination and the upper body strength of a T-rex” (her words, not ours), she quickly fell in love with the sport and has been an avid climber ever since! She loves the physical and intellectual challenge of climbing, the impact it’s had on her mental health, and the sense of community and camaraderie that exists among climbers of all experience levels.

The climbing gym is Selena’s favorite place in the world to be, and she loves sharing that enthusiasm with her students! She’s a firm believer that the best way to get better at anything is to have fun with it, and she makes it a priority to design creative, engaging lessons that are tailored to the unique needs of each student.

Selena is a full-time graduate student at Columbia pursuing her Master’s in Counseling Psychology. When she’s not climbing or studying, you can usually find her reading, playing chess, doing yoga, or hanging out with other peoples’ dogs.

Josh Hodge

Josh Hodge

Climbing Coach

Adaptive Kids Fitness Adults

Originally from Tucson, AZ, Josh grew up hearing stories of climbing outings from his mom. The common theme between all of these stories was an open-armed camaraderie between people who felt just as comfortable challenging each other’s limits from a physical and mental perspective while supporting each other through hard climbs, personal failures, & life’s rough patches. This sense of community is what drew Josh back into climbing after a decade-long hiatus.

During his lessons, Josh strives to instill a sense of confidence & self-trust through communication and encouragement. His goal is to excite, motivate, and build curiosity. When he isn’t rock climbing, he is living out his childhood dream –performing throughout the city with his bassoon. Committed to engaging and supporting his community, Josh is one of CRG’s ambassadors for Climbing Beyond the Barrier, non-profit geared towards expanding access to climbing and outdoor sports and hosts an LGBTQ Climb Night twice a month.

Taking a day off from climbing is the toughest part for him. Noah loves seeing progression, no matter how small. He values enjoyment while learning, building self-confidence, and elevating your skillset. Veronica Grijalva

Veronica Grijalva

Climbing Coach

Kids Adults

Veronica got into climbing in the hopes of counteracting some of the damage being done by working at a desk for 12+ hours a day. It worked a bit too well, and now she has ditched the desk in favor of climbing up walls.

Veronica loves the problem solving aspect of climbing, and that there are as many ways to climb a problem as there are people who attempt it. She is a body positive athlete who believes that climbing is for everybody, and enjoys helping climbers find beta that works for their unique blend of strengths and weaknesses. She also focuses on climbing mentality, positive self-talk, fear management, and having fun!

When Veronica isn’t on a wall, she’s usually playing DDR, singing karaoke, or taking photos of her cat, Nougat.
