Major League Climbing

What is Major League Climbing?

Major League Climbing is a recreational bouldering league for all skill levels where you get to compete on your own time at CRG Fenway and CRG North Station.

Form teams of four or sign up as a free agent to be placed on a team. You will have one week after the new set goes up at North Station (Monday) and Fenway (Thursday) to log your hardest three climbs on your scorecard at the front desk, and a bonus multiplier will be added to teams who climb at both locations each week.

Climbers’ scores will be adjusted to ensure that everybody has an opportunity to contribute to the team’s score regardless of skill level.

Knock it out of the park!

MLC is as much a challenge for yourself as it is a competition with others. MLC keeps you accountable to your fitness goals by rewarding additional climbing sessions, pushes you to try climbs you would otherwise avoid, and the team dynamic can provide that extra bit of motivation to work on your project.

After five weeks the scores will be tallied up and the winners will be announced! All participants will also be invited to a party at the end of the league, get entered in raffles, and receive a limited edition MLC Season 6 sticker.

Scoring

Participants will self-select a grade level based on their expected climbing outcomes (your grade level should be the grade that you find challenging, but that you would expect to complete within one session).

A completed climb at your grade level will be worth 50 points, a climb one grade higher will be awarded 55 points, a climb one grade easier will be awarded 45 points, etc. Each competitor’s top three climbs from either location will be added together to create that competitor’s score, and all competitor’s on each team will have their scores combined to create the team’s total score for that week.

Competitors who climb at both locations in a given week will get a 10% boost to their scores. Competitors who routinely overperform or underperform their self-selected grade level will have their grade level adjusted by CRG staff.

The chart here provides a scoring breakdown with the bolded grades representing your grade level.

table showing values for variables V0 through V10 arranged diagonally. Each row and column contains multiples of 5, ranging from 0 to 100. The bold diagonal entries (V0–V10) mark reference points, with values to their right increasing by 5 across each row and values below decreasing by 5 down each column. Each Vn label appears one column to the right and one row lower than the previous, creating a staircase pattern across the grid.

Frequently Used Excuses

There’s no reason not to participate! We’ve heard every excuse in the book! Read our responses to the Frequently Used Excuses below!

Hogwash! In the words of alpinist Alex Lowe, the best climber is the one having the most fun. The League is designed to reward participation equally regardless of skill level.

Scores are based on improvement rather than absolute difficulty. Everybody stands a good chance of winning, in fact newer climbers have more room to improve and may even have an advantage!

We beg to differ! All you need to participate is to climb once per week at either the Fenway or North Station locations and log three climbs.

Your lowest weekly score will be dropped, so you only need to log climbs in four of the five weeks.

Climbing at both locations in one week is rewarded with extra points, but is not required.

We’ve got you covered! Sign up as a Free Agent to be placed on a team with other free agents.

It’s a great way to meet other community members, and last season one of the free agent teams ended up with a podium finish!

Have no fear! MLC may be a climbing competition, but it is not full of the coordination climbs you’d associate with “comp-style”.

The boulders set as part of MLC are designed to be as accessible for as many climbers as possible.

While there may still be some jumping, there are no more “comp-style” boulders than usual.
