Why do I need a waiver?
Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. We go to great lengths to make our facilities as safe as possible to ensure that patrons of the facility are safe. That said we require a waiver from every visitor to the gym in order to stay in operation and for insurance purposes. All customers under the age of 18 MUST have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. Grandparents, siblings, and teachers do not count.

What types of climbing are available?
Central Rock Gym Waltham is a bouldering only facility.
Bouldering does not require ropes, instead it focuses on shorter walls (10 – 14 feet tall) with significantly more padding on the ground. Partners are not required for this style of climbing. Check out our First Time Boulderer video for more information. A short bouldering orientation from a CRG staff member is required for this type of climbing.

I have never been climbing before, what are my options?
The best thing about bouldering is how intuitive it is! Our trained desk staff will give you all the essential information to make sure you have a safe and fun first visit. After that, it’s just you and gravity!

Do I have to take a belay class in order to climb?
Our Waltham facility is bouldering only, so there are no ropes to belay with! Our desk staff give each climber a tutorial to make sure they have enough training to be safe and have fun. This preliminary training is given during your first visit and does not require an appointment. Come on in!

I have a child under 5, can they climb?
We do not recommend bouldering for small children. Climbing with a harness attached to a rope is a great option for kids! Central Rock Gym Watertown is 5 minutes down the road with plenty of climbing options for children tied in to a harness.

What should I wear?
Wear something that you are comfortable moving around in. We suggest flexible pants and something that is not too baggy. It is recommended that you wear shorts or pants that do not need a belt. Think: Phys. Ed Class. We have all of the gear you need for climbing, so no need to worry about that part!

How do I set up private sessions?
Private sessions can be set up with one of our instructors, but we prefer to get climbers placed into the group setting that our regularly scheduled clinics offer. If those days and times do not work, just give us a call or email us, and we can set you up with a private instructor.
