Our annual Fall Boulder League begins on Thursday, October 6th, after the new boulder set is completed.
How It Works:
- Starting on Friday, October 6th (after the new boulder set is completed) and running until end of day on Friday, November 10th, climbers will compete to send their hardest boulders, earning points in the process with the hope of out-scoring other participants.
- During the League, boulders will be reset on both Thursday on Friday. Each new set will remained closed beginning Thursday morning until Friday at 3pm. You will then have one week (until end of day on the following Friday) to send as many routes from that set as you can.
- The boulder rotation for the League will be a little different than the standard rotation. The rotation will be:
- The Cave -> The Overbite -> Back Arch / Slabs -> The Prow -> Little O
- This is both an Individual AND a Team League. You can compete in both categories. When registering, just select the appropriate options.
- Participants will earn points for each route they send, which they will record on the provided scorecard. Scorecards will be kept at the gym.
- Sends must be verified by obtaining a witnesses’ initials on the scorecard.
- At the league’s end, prizes will be given out to the individual winners and winning teams that place in the top 3 of their category.
- Please note that during the League we will begin resetting each boulder section beginning on Wednesday. The set will open on Thursday afternoon / evening when setting is complete.
Scoring:
- We are using cumulative scoring for this league. The more climbs you complete (even ones you might consider easy), the higher your score will be.
- As new routes are set during the League, they will be labeled with a point value instead of a grade. To earn points, you will complete applicable routes and have someone witness the send. Be sure to record your attempts as well!
- Each route will remain active to score points on for 7 days (Friday afternoon until end of day on the following Friday) after which time those routes will revert to our standard grading and points can no longer be earned.
- If you flash a route, you earn bonus points for that climb, equal to 3% of that route’s point value.
- For example, if the route is normally worth 250 and you flash it, you get an extra 7.5 points, bringing your final score up to 257.5 points.
- To indicate this on your scorecard, have your witness initial in the ‘Flash’ box. Do not adjust the point value of the climb – we will do this during scorekeeping.
- At the end of the league, your lowest week’s score will be dropped. So if you miss a week / have a high gravity week, no problem.
- At the end of the league, your weekly scores will be averaged together to get your final score.
- In the event of a tie, attempts will determine the winner. Be sure to record your attempts.
Sends:
- To earn points on a route, you must climb it from start to finish in one go. This is also called a send.
- Criteria for a send:
- You may only use holds that are part of the route to help you progress towards the finish. All routes are monochromatic.
- Volumes are on for all climbs.
- Holds on a volume that are not the same color as the route you are on are off, though you can use the gray volume around them.
- In order to complete a climb, you must show control both at the start and at top of the wall or the finish hold(s) with both hands. Make sure to check where the route finishes before starting.
- Showing control at the start involves having both hands on the hold(s) with your feet off the ground for 3 seconds or more. You cannot grab the start then jump off the floor and grab the next hold. That is an illegal start.
- You cannot grab the top of the wall then climb over to the route’s finish hold(s).
- You must have a witness to sign off that you sent the climb. This could be anyone as long as they can visually confirm that you completed the route in accordance with the above criteria.
- You may only use holds that are part of the route to help you progress towards the finish. All routes are monochromatic.
Attempts:
- It is important to record every single attempt you make. Attempts will be used to break ties between climbers.
- Attempts are defined as any climbing on the route. Climbing up an adjacent route then scooting over to the desired route to try a move in isolation counts as an attempt. In short, every time you touch the route is an attempt.
- All participants have unlimited attempts.
Cost:
- $5. The cost will be used to help pay for prizes.
- Purchase a league t-shirt (pictured) for an optional $20 during registration. End of day on 10/18 is the last day to order a shirt.
- Registration closes at the end of day on Wednesday, October 18th.
- Be sure to stop by the desk to register!
*Shirt color subject to change depending on printer’s availability. It should remain similar to the above.
