Central Rock Gym exists to provide everyone with a world class indoor climbing, fitness, and community experience through our state of the art facilities, expansive climbing walls, cutting edge fitness equipment, professional yoga classes, and various youth programs and summer camps. It is through these many offerings that our CRG staff and members come together to build a community of climbers and friends. Central Rock Gym embraces its role as an integral part of the social fabric of all of our host cities and communities.
Central Rock Gym started from humble beginnings. Brothers, Joe and Ed Hardy, had an immense passion for climbing and wanted to bring the sport to their hometown of Worcester, MA. In 2007 they began laying the groundwork for creating a business that could serve their community in a profoundly meaningful way, and in 2009 Central Rock Gym Worcester was born. Since then, the brothers have continued to identify communities that could benefit from the social and physical aspects of climbing.
CRG Worcester was the first location and was different from the start. Our first location was built from the ground up, over 40 ft. tall, with tons of natural light pouring through the windows, the climbing features like the steep lead wall were both trend setting and a standard for the CRG chain of gyms to have incredible lead climbing, top roping and bouldering.
CRG Hadley was born. Passionate Western MA climbers were traveling over 1 hour to come to Worcester, and we wanted to serve them better. Farley Ledges is just a few minutes down the road and has bred a strong generation of climbers!
*Fitness and Yoga are added as standard amenities at all CRG locations with beautiful yoga rooms, state-of-the-art fitness and weight equipment. Rogue, Life Fitness, Star Trac, Precor, and Matrix are some of the excellent brands we use.
CRG Watertown was an over 2 year development project, but worth it. CRG Watertown is one of the top ten largest gyms in the country and hosted US Nationals, twice! It is home to a 50 ft. lead wall and some of the craziest comps each year, like Ring of Fire and The Heist.
CRG Glastonbury was the fourth and by far the largest facility up to that date. Clocking in at 30,000 sq. ft., this facility hosts some incredible comps, and provides a huge open space for the community to engage and learn from each other.
CRG Cambridge opened because we wanted to continue to serve the Boston community near public transit. This location is right down the road from Alewife (red line) and in the heart of the growing Fresh Pond community.
CRG Randolph serves the south of Boston communities, with an incredibly vibrant community of climbers who love the super tall, gentle lead wall, the wildly fun kids area with a big slide and themed walls.
CRG Warwick opened its doors to the entire RI community right in the middle of the state. Just south of Providence, and near wonderful outdoor locations like Lincoln woods, CRG focused on some of the most fantastic bouldering walls in the country, with inspiring features.
CRG Syracuse is one of the more unique locations in the CRG chain, with 45 ft. walls on a mezzanine, it feels like you are climbing in the sky. This location is inside a historic building that was originally an ice-cream factory. And with the views of downtown and beautiful Franklin Square, this gym is serving up some sweet climbing.
CRG Framingham joined the community of CRG gyms just after Framingham was declared a city. The sweeping views of the boulder field from the front entry are enough to get you wanting to try the sport.
CRG Hadley, Worcester, Watertown and Cambridge all receive massive upgrades, expansions, new padding for bouldering areas, and new fitness equipment.
CRG Manhattan opens! CRG built a bouldering and training focused gym in the heart of downtown Manhattan, just 3 blocks from Columbus Circle. This bouldering focused gym has over 400 linear feet of bouldering and rope walls 40 ft. tall!
CRG Stoneham will open in winter of 2018, and serves the north of Boston community. The facility will be built from the ground up, 45 ft. tall, hitting all disciplines in climbing, and continuing to push climbing with the best routes and climbs in the industry.
We are also serving the greater upstate NY region with a facility in Rochester, NY and Buffalo NY. Both are located in the hear of downtown, these 20,000 sq. ft. facilities will have over 20,000 sq. ft. of climbing surface, 45ft. tall. Both will have 300 linear feet of bouldering, a dedicated kids area, fitness and yoga.
Central Rock Gym has always prided itself on being a community driven business. With each location we open, we always try to identify the most talented staff capable of fostering an inclusive community where everyone feels welcome and can feed off the energy and passion of others. We feel that this passion and community is a vital part of showcasing all the great benefits that rock climbing has to offer.
A membership that comes with perks!
Memberships to any of our locations gets you access to our entire chain of gyms. Each gym tailors it’s membership offerings to best suit the community, and always includes free rentals for a period, discounts on retail purchases, free classes, and much more. Most importantly we make the memberships super easy and valuable by providing fitness areas and classes that help members qualify for insurance reimbursements while eliminating contracts.
The competitions that we host and organize every year showcase the true depth and character of CRG. Competitions are one of many ways we try to provide fun and engaging events for our members and community. Each year we have many comps, but two in particular stand out for their reputation, scale, and impact on the community..
The Ring of Fire is one of the only professional rope climbing competitions in the country with divisions for the pros as well as citizens. We were all to happy to host USAC Adult Nationals at our Watertown facility as part of this competition in 2015 and 2016. And it’ll be back in a big way with competitions throughout New England with pros coming from across the country, tons of prizes, and a great atmosphere.
The Heist, a first of it’s kind competition run by women, set by women, and climbed by women has been a phenomenally successful competition that began back in 2015. Our goal was to create a competition where the entire focus could be on the amazing setters and climbers the ladies of our sport have to offer.
We are constantly finding ways in which we can grow within the community and give back to those who help support our facilities. Many of our outreach programs involve giving back to the community to support local schools and climbing organizations.
Two programs we are extremely happy to be a part of are…
Waypoint Adventure, a non-profit educational organization founded in 2010 that uses quality experiential and adventure-based programs to transform the lives of individuals with disabilities. Waypoint designs adventure programs that are not just about having fun – They are about positive individual and group development. They’re about building social and character skills, forming teams and transforming people’s views of themselves and their abilities. Waypoint believes that all people, regardless of ability, will have opportunities for adventure, and through them realize their personal value, strengths and abilities. The challenge faced and support discovered in these experiences challenge people to become stronger individuals and community members.
Adaptive Climbing Program, started at CRG Watertown and now available at most of our locations we offer in house programs similar to those run by Waypoint Adventures, but done on a weekly basis. The goal? To expose people to the sport of climbing who would otherwise think it an activity beyond their capability. To broaden their idea of what is possible. And to help them excel in a sport many participants would view as closed off to them. This sport has become such a passion for many of these individuals and has lead them to compete in climbing competitions across the United States and overseas.
Central Rock Gym’s setting program is lead by Director of Route Setting, Shane Messer. Under his leadership, the setting team is focused on providing a top-notch industry product that is both creative and fun. Each week, our members experience a broad variety of new boulder problems and routes that provide challenges across the difficulty spectrum. At each gym there is a local head-setter who interacts with the community and provides a custom route distribution specifically tailored to the needs of your gym.
An important part of route setting is hold-selection. While it is possible to create great routes with older holds, we believe that the most inspirational routes are created when excellent setting is combined with the best shapes and volumes. We like to arm our setters with the newest holds on the market and we are always updating our inventory.
We hope you enjoy the climbs at our gyms. We invest a huge amount of time and energy into creating a product that is worthy of our awesome communities. There is always room to improve in route setting, so please let our staff know if you think we are missing a certain type of climb.
