Dear CRG Manhattan Community,
As you may know, we are in Phase 2 of the COVID-19 reopening and Phase 3 is expected to begin July 6. According to the current plan, businesses like ours may be able to open in Phase 4 which should start around July 20th. We expect to hear further guidance from the state on an actual opening date, and policies regarding indoor recreation activities like rock climbing in the next week or so.
We have been working incredibly hard to get our facility ready for reopening, and making it look and feel new again. We are completing a full re-set with new volumes, we have added an additional autobelay, changed out the padding in the top-rope area, and given many of our walls a fresh coat of paint.
We have also taken additional steps to ensure the safety of our staff and customers, preparing our facility for social distancing.
Some of the new things you can expect are:
- Reduced occupancy: When we do re-open it will be at a limited capacity so all climbers will be required to sign up online for a 2-hour time slot. This should make social distancing very easy.
- Liquid Chalk: We are replacing our communal chalk buckets with high alcohol content liquid chalk.
- New check-in process: We will take your temperature with a touch-free thermometer and request that you use hand sanitizer upon entering the facility.
- Face coverings: climbers will need to wear a mask while at our location.
We will keep you updated on our new procedures as we get closer to opening, hopefully on or around July 20.
We look forward to rebuilding our community and getting to share the awesome sport of climbing again!

New York has begun to ease restrictions and started to reopen businesses in phases, with phase 1 in NYC projected to start June 8. As you may know, we are in Phase 4 of the reopening plan. Based on the time window between each phase, we are hopeful to reopen in mid to late July as long as there is a continued downward trajectory for new cases of COVID-19.
In order to promote social distancing, and to comply with state regulations, we will open with a reduced occupancy. Fewer occupants at any time will make it much easier to maintain social distance. This means that we will have an online reservation system for booking your climbing session. As more details emerge from the government, we will keep you posted on the reservation process and new policies at the gym. The next two paragraphs are the policies that you will likely encounter when you return, but we will keep you posted as new standards and regulations come from the local authorities.
Thanks again for all your support! We will send out more communications in weeks ahead.

Dear CRG Manhattan Community,
We miss you!
As you probably know, New York is still closed for non-essential business at this time. We are continuing to look for guidance from our State officials regarding a possible re-opening date. While we were hoping for more clarity by the end of April, the unprecedented nature of Covid-19 and the need for continued social distancing are providing little certainty about a new opening date. We would love to announce a concrete time for our community to return to climbing, but at this point it seems irresponsible to guess. Instead, we will continue to monitor the state and local authorities and let you know when anything important emerges with regard to reopening.
In the meantime, we cannot thank you enough for your continued support of CRG Manhattan.
We hope you get to watch this thank you video from your Manhattan staff:
We have been receiving non-stop emails, social media messages, and phone calls of support that help us feel so connected and grateful for YOU. Your continued financial support has allowed us to keep all of our salaried staff fully employed during the shut-down. That means we are still receiving our full paycheck, benefits and health insurance! In addition, your funds are helping us make necessary re-opening investments (like cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, and PPE for members and staff) as well as honor our facility lease, utilities, and general maintenance. We cannot emphasize enough how your continued support is ESSENTIAL, more than ever, to reopening as a healthy and vibrant community! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
We appreciate how hard it is to stay at home and flatten the curve and we hope that you’re finding creative ways to work out and stay connected during this time. Our staff miss the daily interactions they used to have with you, and we look forward to bringing you good news of reopening as soon as it is possible! Hang in there, be safe, and stay connected!

Dear CRG Manhattan Community,
Since our shutdown announcement last week, the need for social distancing to prevent the rapid spread of COVID-19 has only become more important to our climbing community and society. While we cannot predict with any accuracy a date to reopen, we believe that it will be no earlier than May 1st, and we will continue to stay in touch as the situation evolves.
Since our announcement last week, the community response and support have been overwhelming. It has been truly humbling to see our community rally around us by letting us know how much this community means to you all. We have received emails, social media posts, and phone calls of support to affirm the importance of CRG in our members’ lives. The most common message is that our members will be here for us while we’re closed and ready to rebuild our community fabric as we re-open.
If you would like to support us and our staff during this difficult time, we humbly ask that you please consider keeping your membership active for the month of April. We realize that this would be a complete act of generosity and not at all expected or required. If you would like to cancel or freeze your membership, given the circumstances, please find the link in our recent email to members or on our website under “My Account”.
You may also consider supporting us via the purchasing of gift cards online.
Remember that we all need social connection during this time, so make sure you are reaching out to your family, friends, and climbing community online or over the phone!
We hope that you and your loved ones are all healthy and safe, and we look forward to rebuilding our incredible community with you in the near future.
